from addis ababa, we drove north to bahar dar (on the south shore of lake tana - which has the source of the blue nile). then we headed east to lalibela (home to the famous rock hewn churches). from lalibela we went back south to addis only to catch a minibus later that day to harar (in the east of the country). tomorrow (or at least within the next couple of days) we hope to head south to the kenyan border town of moyale. basically we are on a mission to get down to nairobi ASAP.

the plan was sudan. we had our visas and were feeling pretty optimistic. only thing we didn't have? our ferry tickets. once a week (monday's) the ferry goes from the aswan high dam, egypt through lake nasser to wadi halfa, sudan. we waited in the blistering sun (+ 40 C) from 11:30 am til 4:30 pm, hoping to be 2 of maybe 10 or so chosen to get on the ferry (all of us waiting had not purchased our tickets in advance like we should have....we didn't know these tickets were such a hot commodity). all this to say we were not chosen. bummed out, slightly sun-stroked and a tad dehydrated, we caught the first train out of aswan to cairo. we arrived in cairo this morning and quickly set out to book a flight out of here.......anywhere. soooooooo, later tonight we fly out of cairo and into addis ababa, ethiopia. we've loved our experience here in egypt but are very ready for something new. ethiopia here we come!

so...next....tonight we go to luxor via train, which is south down the nile. After that, we hit aswan (known for its dam) and then catch a ferry down the nile, through lake nasser into sudan (a town called wadi halfa). This is the only way into sudan from eygpt...there are no land border crossings! apparently this ferry is crazy. once in sudan, we'll have to decide which route to take to khartoum.

if you're keeping track of our heads, we're heading from cairo east to dahab (in the sinai peninsula). it is supposed to be an amazing snorkl spot. it is on the north shore of the red sea. we plan on heading tomorrow morning sometime.
